Navy vs Maryland Football Game Scores: NCAA College Football 2010 Updates – The first highly anticipated game match that is scheduled today at the NCAA College Football is between the Navy Midshipmen and the Maryland Terrapins.

Catch the lived now via ESPN and find out for which team will win and will advance to the next level of the season’s football tournament. The game will kick off at exactly 4:00 pm ET.

This is the game match where Navy Midshipmen will trip to the Maryland Terrapins. Navy is coming off of a 10-4 season, going 1-1 against the top 25.

Meanwhile, the Navy Midshipmen will be leading by head coach Ken Niumatalolo who had a winning record of 10-4 last College football season. Starting quarterback for this game will be Ricky Dobbs. However the game will be decided by the Terps’ offense against the Mids’ D. Jamarr Robinson will need to exploit the Navy defense.

The Terps won the most recent meeting between the two schools on the gridiron, defeating Navy, 23-20 back in 2005. However, the Midshipmen hold a 14-6 edge over Maryland in the all-time series and that includes a 3-2 edge over the Terps in matchups in Baltimore.

On the other hand, the Maryland Terrapins are led by head coach Ralph Friedgen who had a record of 2-10 last College football season. Starting quarterback for this game will be Chris Turner. Maryland’s defense has had plenty of time to prepare for this defense, but that still does not guarantee success.

So what are you waiting for, watch them live via ESPN and witness the NCAA College Football 2010 featuring Navy vs Maryland. You may now check your local channel listings for the availability of the video.

Please standby here for more updates and results of the game. For the meantime, enjoy watching the Navy vs Maryland now.

Do you think the recent success of the Navy football program has turned some heads in College Park?
Maybe. This past weekend the the University of Maryland went the military academy route in naming their new athletic director.
Not only does Kevin Anderson come to Maryland’s flagship university from the U.S. ...

Do you think the recent success of the Navy football program has turned some heads in College Park?

Maybe. This past weekend the the University of Maryland went the military academy route in naming their new athletic director.

Not only does Kevin Anderson come to Maryland’s flagship university from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point where he was Army’s athletic director for more than 5 years, he also brings a corporate background with him from his days past as an executive at Xerox. UMd’s new AD is an administrator who not only knows his way around a college campus, but also a corporate campus.

It’s a mix that the powers-to-be at Maryland believe will take the athletic department to new heights.

Kevin Anderson has a history of working at school’s with high standards when it comes to both athletics and academics. Stops at Stanford, Cal and Army are a testament to that.

Even though our friends at the Naval Academy owned Army on the football gridiron during Anderson’s time at the helm in West Point, here’s a guy who snapped Army’s 27-year drought in the all-sports rivalry, giving the Black Knights their first series win over Navy last year since going 9-8-1 (.528) in 1977-78.

If just a few weeks the University of Maryland has filled two if its highest profile jobs on campus. Dr. Wallace Loh has been named the school’s new president and now Kevin Anderson has signed on the dotted line as the school’s new athletic director.

So what will that mean, if anything, to existing coaches and staff in College Park? I.e. Ralph Friedgen and Gary Williams.

In the last two years, Anderson led searches at Army that resulted in the hiring of Rich Ellerson as Army’s football coach and Zach Spiker as the program’s men’s basketball coach. That means he also was running the athletic department at West Point when the academy decided it was time to make changes at the top of its two marquee athletic programs, football and basketball.

In his first season, Ellerson (pictured above and below) led the Black Knights to their winningest football season since 1996 and came just one victory from a bowl berth, while Spiker posted the most wins by a first-year Army basketball coach since Bob Knight led the Black Knights.

Anderson’s bio at Army says he was instrumental in negotiating a broadcast extension with CBS Sports to televise the Army-Navy football game through 2018, a new national television deal with CBS College Sports Network for Army’s football program, separate contracts with three different cities to serve as host for future Army-Navy games, and a landmark agreement with the New York Yankees that will result in Army’s football team playing one game in each of the next six seasons at Yankee Stadium.

Army’s athletic web site also lists Anderson as brokering “major broadcast agreements” for Army’s football program with ESPN and WABC Radio in NYC, as well as aligning the Black Knights’ athletics teams with Nike.

In Anderson’s first year at West Point, Army’s athletic program even won a National Championship in rifle.

Maryland’s new athletic director had a whirlwind Labor Day weekend as he was named AD on Saturday and then was wearing his Terrapin finest at M&T Bank Stadium on Monday for the big game against Navy. You can bet he got a chance to meet plenty of Terps faithful in Baltimore during his first afternoon on the big stage as the new leader of Maryland’s athletic department.

How ironic is it that Kevin Anderson’s first big game as Maryland’s new AD came against the same Navy team that was his big rival for the last 5 1/2 years while he had the same job at Army.

ESPN college football scores has a huge sports betting picks double-header. Spokeo may have all your secrets online. However, the professional sports betting secrets are on the OffshoreInsiders.com Network.

Sonya Thomas pulls off the Labor Day stunner, but there could be more.

OddsShark.com:Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rays begin a series at Fenway Park against the Red Sox, the CFL stages its holiday rivalries, and Boise State battles Virginia Tech.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

College football wraps up its first week with two games on Monday: Navy vs. Maryland (at M&T Bank Stadium), and No. 3 Boise State vs. No. 10 Virginia Tech (at FedExField). Oddsmakers have Navy set as the 6.5-point favorite in that first matchup, with the total at 48.5. Boise State is then a slim 1.5-point favorite, with the total for that contest at 50.5.

Top expert picks on today’s card…

For Boise State vs. Virginia Tech: The pro bettors are 13-3 with “named plays” this season. The biggest play of NCAAF so far goes tonight on Boise State and Virginia Tech. It’s the ESPN Best Bet of the Month. It’s from ScoresOddsPicks for $12

Navy vs. Maryland has the top capper in history. The GodsTips Labor Day winathon continued yesterday. The Center of the Handicapping Universe is 15-7 the last 22 including 4-0 with Wise Guys. Included are six MLB underdog winners, a huge Dandy Dog on Baltimore +160 yesterday.

Get a Wise Guy on the Maryland-Navy side and a Major on the total. Five MLB including a Wise Guy. MLB picks included in the $17 price

As well, the Canadian Football League offers up its regular Labour Day battles on Monday, with Toronto at Hamilton and Edmonton at Calgary. The Argonauts (5-3 SU, 5-3 ATS) and Tiger-Cats (4-4 SU, 4-4 ATS) will be playing for the second straight game; Hamilton won 16-12 on the road in Week 8, and they’re a 4-point home favorite for Monday (with the total at 50). The Eskimos (2-6 SU, 3-5 ATS) are big 12.5-point underdogs against the rival Stampeders (7-1 SU, 6-2 ATS), with that game’s total at 54.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League baseball betting schedule for Monday it’s Baltimore at the Yankees, the White Sox at Detroit, Texas at Toronto, Kansas City at Minnesota, Seattle at Oakland, Cleveland at the Angels, and Tampa Bay at Boston. The Rays will go with Jeff Niemann (10-5, 3.97 ERA) in that last matchup, while the Red Sox counter with Jon Lester (15-8, 3.27 ERA). Righthander Niemann has been knocked around in each of his last two starts, giving up a combined 17 runs on 15 hits over 8 1-3 innings of work against the Blue Jays and Angels. Lefthander Lester is coming off a win over the Orioles (five runs in six innings), and he beat the Rays on August 27 (one unearned run in seven innings).

Over in the National League on Monday there’s a doubleheader between the Marlins and Phillies in Philadelphia, along with the Mets at Washington, Atlanta at Pittsburgh, St. Louis at Milwaukee, Houston at the Cubs, San Francisco at Arizona, the Dodgers at San Diego, and Cincinnati at Colorado. Aaron Harang (6-7, 4.92 ERA) is slated to take on Ubaldo Jimenez (17-6, 2.69 ERA) in that Reds/Rockies matchup. Righthander Harang took a no-decision against the Brewers last time out, giving up three runs (one earned) on eight hits over just four innings. Righthander Jimenez is coming off a hard-luck loss to the Giants in which he gave up two runs over eight innings while fanning 10.

The conversation took place in the kitchen of Thomas Cobb’s home in Douglasville, Ga., the summer that Ricky Dobbs left for the Naval Academy Preparatory School.

Cobb, who had coached his nephew in youth football and took Dobbs into his home in the eighth grade when Dobbs’ mother battled addictions to alcohol and crack cocaine, had the next five years all planned for a teenager who once predicted he would someday become the president of the United States.

“He said that if I could start [for Navy] by my sophomore year, then the sky’s the limit with this offense and I could be up for a Heisman Trophy, All-American candidate, all of this stuff,” Dobbs recalled “I find it funny that everything that he said would happen in my life came true. He always said that I had that magic and he said that the magic comes from the chief magician.

“I play with a higher being, and that’s what he’s instilled in me.”

As Dobbs embarks on the final season of his career at Navy against Maryland Monday at M&T Bank Stadium — a career that began in essence when Dobbs took over as a sophomore for a pair of injured senior quarterbacks and led the team to victory in three games — he is being mentioned as a candidate for the Heisman and other prestigious college football awards.

“We saw glimpses that this kid has a chance to be special,” said Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo, who in his first season in 2008 was initially hesitant to hand the reigns to the team’s precision triple option offense over to Dobbs because of his inconsistent practice habits. “All of his accomplishments are hard to foresee. He keeps doing things that amaze me.”

Many longtime Navy fans are calling Dobbs a modern-day Roger Staubach, but he is more like a recent star at another school whose impact was felt on and off the field. Even some of Dobbs’ relatives back home outside Atlanta have mentioned the similarities to Tim Tebow, the former Florida star and Heisman Trophy winner now with the Denver Broncos, given the way the two quarterbacks play and pray.

Though not a huge football fan himself, Dobbs was well aware of Tebow’s persona as a Gator,.

“When I was a freshman and sophomore watching, that’s kind of how I envisioned myself,” Dobbs said. “There’s a lot of similarities between both of us because of the mindset. He’s one who gives all the glory to God just like myself. He’s just an instrument, like me. He’s not scared of putting it (his religious belief) out there. There’ are very few who get a lot of limelight like him who will do that.”

Niumatalolo sees the same traits in Dobbs.

“Strong, spiritual background, not embarrassed about his beliefs, just a good human being, very good football player,” Niumatalolo said recently. “Mentally tough young man, he willed us to win games. There’s nothing that he thinks he can’t accomplish.”

Niumatalolo also understands the downfall to such a comparison to Tebow.

“I don’t know him, but some people might have been turned off,” Niumatalolo said of Tebow. “To me it seems genuine. Tim Tebow seems like a great human being, It’s the same thing with Ricky, his infectious personality, who he is, his positive thinking, all these goals he has, it’s not a fluke, it’s not some sort of promotion, that’s just who he is.”

Said Thomas Cobb, “He definitely plays the game with a spiritual sense. He’ll go out there and play with a certain scripture or psalm in his mind, like Tebow did.”

If anything, Dobbs is Tebow without the hype. There are no Heisman campaigns coming out of Annapolis, though former Heisman winner Andre Ware, now an ESPN analyst, said recently on national television that Dobbs is his dark-horse candidate for college football’s most coveted award.

Tebow was nationally-known before he arrived in Gainesville; Dobbs had to break Tebow’s single-season NCAA record for touchdowns by a quarterback last year to get noticed.

Given Dobbs’ well-publicized goal of becoming president in 2040, he looks at the attention he is now receiving as on the job training.

“In a way I kind of see it as preparing me,” said Dobbs, who received a letter of encouragement from former President Jimmy Carter, a fellow Georgian and Naval Academy graduate, was recognized by Congress and received the key to the city in his hometown this summer. “Sometimes it is tough, but I fall back to my faith, God won’t put more on me than I can bear. I can handle it, it’s just my mindset and the way I try to take it on.”

Considering what Dobbs has already endured in his life — in particular watching his mother, Barbara Cobb, struggle with drugs and alcohol, get clean and then nearly die during open heart surgery — what has happened the past four years has not been that difficult. Even last year, when he played with a cracked kneecap that required surgery a few weeks after Navy finished a 10-4 season with a 35-13 win over Missouri in the Texas Bowl.

Forty-six years and two return engagements later, most people still can’t talk about a Maryland-Navy football game without talking about Jerry Fishman and the infamous finger.

Forty-six years and two return engagements later, most people still can’t talk about a Maryland-Navy football game without talking about Jerry Fishman and the infamous finger.

“I think it’s about time it stopped,” said Fishman, a former Maryland linebacker whose one-digit salute to the corps of Midshipmen during a 1964 Maryland win at Byrd Stadium was long credited (or blamed) for the four-decade pause to the in-state rivalry.

“But it’s a great story, and it sells newspapers. My (10-year-old) son says he wants to carry on the family tradition,” he added, laughing, “and give Navy the finger.”

Monday’s game between Maryland and Navy in Baltimore follows one played in 2005, also in Baltimore. That 2005 game was the first since the teams’ contract was allowed to expire in the midst of acrimony in 1965.

Meanwhile, as the legend of Fishman Finger continues to hover like a cloud over every meeting and non-meeting between Maryland and Navy, a far more engaging tale was persistently overshadowed. Fishman, the player portrayed in local lore as the villain who killed the rivalry, was also the personal protector, and later lifelong friend, of the first black football player in the Atlantic Coast Conference, wide receiver Darryl Hill (pictured above) — who also happened to have been a former Navy player, once poised to be the Jackie Robinson of the service academy teams.

Said Hill, now retired as a businessman and Maryland athletic department fundraiser, and one of 12 players to be honored this season in the ACC Football Legends Class of 2010: “Fishman is not the guy everybody makes him out to be. He’s a very good guy.”

In 1963 and ‘64 — Hill’s only two seasons playing for Maryland, and Fishman’s junior and senior seasons — the two players had each other’s backs when each needed someone there desperately, practically with their lives at stake. For every story of an indignity served upon Hill as he integrated one of the two major southern conferences at the height of the civil rights movement of the 1960s, there was a story of Fishman lashing out at Hill’s tormentors, whether on another team, in a hostile stadium or, in one well-known instance, in a dining hall.

Before the Terps played Wake Forest in 1963, the team sat down for a cafeteria-style meal in Winston-Salem, N.C. That is, most of the team sat down. “They had served everybody but me,” Hill recalled. “They told me, ‘We don’t serve Negroes here.’ Jerry, of course, says to them. ‘No problem, we don’t have a taste for Negroes today, but can we have some milkshakes?”’

Management threatened to call the police, and the team walked out — but not before Fishman had walked the length of the counter and swept all the food and dishes onto the floor.

“There are all sorts of things that happened in my career because of my explosiveness,” Fishman, 66, said, in a calm voice that belies any of the madness that even he describes from his days as an athlete. Those “sorts of things” included times that Fishman tore up an off-campus bar that had let all the players but Hill enter; a Civil War parade the morning of a game in Richmond at which Fishman set a Confederate flag on fire from the team bus; and several loud, up-close warnings to opposing players to watch their mouths and actions or else.

There was also the time that fans at South Carolina (then in the ACC), angry that Hill was having a huge first half for Maryland, threw food and screamed racist insults at him as the team entered the tunnel to their locker room. Fishman spotted one Gamecock supporter in the act and bashed him with his helmet. Hill was appreciative — but reminded him afterward, chuckling as he recalled it, “Hey, if anything happens, you’re white, you can blend in with the rest of them. I’m the one in trouble. Remember, you ain’t wearing a yarmulke.”

That was an integral element in their bond. Fishman was the team’s only Jewish player. They were assigned as roommates in Hill’s first season, Fishman said: “He was the only black, and I was the only Jew, and they said, ‘We can kill two birds with one stone.’ You could name every Jewish football player in the world on one hand at the time.”

Hill, now 66, arrived in College Park, Md., fully aware of what he was up against. He grew up in Washington, was the first black player at Gonzaga, the city’s prestigious Catholic high school; spent his freshman year at Xavier, then, at his mother’s request, accepted an appointment at Navy and played for the plebe team, only the second black to do so. (The first, in 1955, never played varsity; Hill was in line to play on the Roger Staubach-led powers of that era).

Over the years, Hill has had nothing negative to say about Navy and said the reason he had looked to transfer was that he simply did not want a military career. But, Fishman said, “He went through a lot of crap at the Naval Academy, because they didn’t like blacks at the Naval Academy.”

There were around a dozen African-Americans enrolled among the 4,000 students at the time. As much as anything else, Fishman added, Hill’s switch from Navy to Maryland fueled some of the fire at that 1964 game, and onlookers at the time recall more than a few racial and ethnic remarks before, during and after the Fishman flip-off.

When he decided to transfer, Hill had reminded the coach recruiting him, a Maryland assistant named Lee Corso, that regardless of how good a player he might be, Corso’s school was still in the all-white ACC.

Fishman, however, was caught off-guard when he arrived in 1960 from Norwalk, Conn. He’d heard his share of anti-Semitic remarks throughout his life, but had attended integrated schools.

“He was this big, aggressive, ferocious middle linebacker who was Jewish,” Hill said, “and I was kind of a frail kind of speed merchant, an intellectual kid, who was black.” He laughed. “Most of the time, it’s the other way around. That’s how he was. Being from Connecticut and being Jewish, he tends to abhor racism.”

In the first state on the other side of the Mason-Dixon line, Fishman said, “It was a shock, and if you ask the guys who played at Maryland with me, ‘Did you know (the state of) Maryland was segregated?,’ most of us didn’t think about it. Even the school was still pretty segregated.” On a campus of more than 35,000 undergraduates, Hill was one of 32 African-Americans.

“He said, ‘I’ll take care of you, and you’ll take care of me,’”
— Darryl Hill on his relationship with Maryland teammate Jerry Fishman Further South was even more of an education. “The amazing thing is, these schools pride themselves on their traditions, their history, their liberalism, the Wake Forests and the Dukes,” he said, “and I think back to the years when you couldn’t get a meal, you couldn’t use the bathroom, you couldn’t stay at a hotel — I can’t believe these things existed in my lifetime. You’d hear, ‘We’re gonna shoot you, we’re gonna kill you.’ They used the N-word all the time; it wasn’t done as an insult, it was just how they referred to blacks, just casually.”

There were two notable exceptions from opposing teams. At Wake Forest, the day after the dinner incident, the hooting crowd was silenced when the Demon Deacons’ star player — Brian Piccolo, later immortalized in Brian’s Song — put an arm around Hill’s shoulder in front of the stands. At Duke, Hill said, he was reassured that he would face “none of that racial stuff” by Blue Devils linebacker, and future NFL star, Mike Curtis.

But those were exceptions. With everything that was looming, Hill and Fishman struck up a partnership that, in essence, was never dissolved. Hill needed an ally, and Fishman — aware of Hill’s sparkling academic record — needed help in an economics class. “He said, ‘I’ll take care of you, and you’ll take care of me,”’ Hill remembered.

By that time, Fishman said, he was used to having to straighten out people on race or religious issues — even Maryland teammates and classmates — with his fists. “Jews weren’t expected, or respected, to play football,” he said. Early in his Maryland career, he said, he settled a score with a teammate who had insulted his heritage, to the point that “when it was over, he had to go.” As in withdraw from school — and without several of his teeth. Hill said he heard that story soon after his arrival, and also said that Fishman routinely stood up for other Jewish athletes and students on campus.

Hill, at about 165 pounds to Fishman’s 230, was not one to fight, but also would not back down. Above and beyond the times he heard taunts and felt hatred from fans, players and even coaches on the field, his most nerve-wracking moment happened in 1963 at Clemson. He found out before kickoff that his mother, who had traveled alone from Washington to the game, was not being allowed into the stadium, which had segregated seating. He was determined to skip the game and take his mother back home, until the school president, Robert Edwards, intervened personally and brought his mother into his private box to watch.

Taking his frustration out on the other team was more Hill’s style. While those were not Maryland’s glory years — it went 3-7 and 5-5 in Hill’s and Fishman’s two seasons as teammates — Hill was among Maryland’s career, season and single-game receiving leaders when he finished. To this day, only three players have more touchdown receptions in a season than the seven Hill caught in 1963.

After a brief stint in the pros with the New York Jets, he spent nearly 40 years starting and growing several businesses, rejoined the Maryland athletic department in 2003 — lured by current coach Ralph Friedgen, who had arrived there as a player a year after Hill graduated — and retired from that last year after major upgrades on Byrd Stadium were completed.

Fishman, like Hill, graduated in 1965, got his law degree and practiced for some 30 years in, of all places, Annapolis, within sight of the Naval Academy. “That was ironic,” he said. He retired in 2002 and moved to Boca Raton, Fla.

He did not attend the 2005 Maryland-Navy game, and will not attend this one because it’s the same weekend his son plays in a baseball tournament. Hill will be on hand, as he was for the last meeting. Both fervently hope that the hostilities of decades past are over; that Fishman stops being made a scapegoat for the series interruption, and that the two biggest programs in the state resume scheduling each other regularly.

What neither has to hope is that the friendship forged as the two biggest outsiders in the history of one of America’s most storied college conferences, will live on.

“When you grow up Jewish,” Fishman said, “you have that empathy for the underdog.”

“Fishman gets a raw deal on this,” Hill said. “People just don’t know what kind of man he is.”

Entering camp, Maryland had questions about a handful of positions, but place kicker was not one of them. That was before sophomore Nick Ferrara struggled though camp, saw too many of his kicks blocked and suffered a groin pull.

Punter Travis Baltz is handling the kicking duties as Ferrara recovers from his injury. When asked about Ferrara’s return, Friedgen said, “I am healthier than he is.”

Baltz, meantime, made 7 of 9 kicks in Friday’s practice and did not have any blocked. But while he earned all-ACC honors in 2008 as a punter, Baltz has never attempted a field goal in a college game.

Ferrara made 18 of 25 field goal attempts last season and all 26 of his extra point attempts. But Friedgen has said his technique has not been consistent through most of camp, and that has caused the kicking game to emerge as one of the biggest concerns on Friedgen’s mind as the season opener nears.

Freshmen getting noticed

One year after 10 freshmen, the most in the Friedgen era, played for the Terrapins, Friedgen pinpointed a handful of first-year players who likely will see the field this season.

Defensive end Ian Evans, left tackle Max Garcia, safeties Matt Robinson and Titus Till and heralded linebacker David Mackall all figure to play. Friedgen also mentioned two defensive backs – Jeremiah Johnson and Desmond Kearse – who could play.

Friedgen said Johnson is a “pretty aggressive guy. He will hit you and he has good coverage skills. If we get a couple more guys hurt, he will play.”

Friedgen praised Kearse’s ability to rush the passer, a skill valued a great deal in coordinator Don Brown’s blitzing defense. “He is not very big, but he is quick and relentless,” Friedgen said of Kearse. “He doesn’t need much to get by you, too. He is like a contortionist. He is another guy you would like to redshirt.”

Michigan’s speedy quarterback with a solid arm and catchy nickname is about to take his talents to a bigger stage.

Robinson and the Wolverines, coming off a season-opening rout over Connecticut, will play rival Notre Dame in its iconic stadium on network TV with millions tuning in Saturday to see if he can duplicate his first start.

“I just have to stay focused,” he said.

Good luck, Shoelace. Robinson created a buzz by running for 197 yards and a touchdown and throwing for 186 yards and another score in a 30-10 win against the Huskies.

His head-turning speed, savvy in the pocket and accurate arm encouraged 113,090 fans at the Big House and embattled coach Rich Rodriguez.

College football’s winningest team desperately needed a star to emerge this season after a pair of miserable years stunted enthusiasm about the Wolverines. Doubts had been raised about whether Rodriguez’s spread offense could work for the team after Bo Schembechler and two of his assistants, Gary Moeller and Lloyd Carr, led the program to success for decades with offenses that were more traditional.

Rodriguez’s ways have worked at every stop he’s made from Glenville State to West Virginia.

Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly is well aware of what is coming, but says Robinson makes Rodriguez’s scheme tough to stop.

“If you look at Rich Rodriguez’s quarterback situation, with Pat White obviously, he’s had some extraordinarily gifted quarterbacks,” Kelly said Sunday. “That’s what makes it the most difficult because you are isolating one-on-one a linebacker, a defensive end, on a quarterback who is not just a quarterback, he’s a great athlete.”

Connecticut coach Randy Edsall lost to Rodriguez in all four meetings when he led West Virginia and had a flashback of sorts during his fifth straight loss to him.

“I would say that Rich would feel very, very comfortable with this guy at quarterback because this is what Rich did when we played him at West Virginia with Pat White,” Edsall said. “I’m not saying that he’s Pat White because Pat was pretty good, but with time I think that this young man will have a chance to become a very good quarterback.”

Rodriguez acknowledged how Robinson played reminded him of some of White’s performances with the Mountaineers.

“Yeah, he runs fast,” Rodriguez said. “Very similar to Pat, Denard really showed a sense of feel and maturity. The game may be fast for everybody else, but it’s slowing down for him.”

Robinson said Connecticut tried to slow him down by taking off his shoes in pileups.

The sophomore from Deerfield Beach, Fla., has been known as Shoelace since he was 7 because he never ties the laces on his cleats. Robinson wasn’t known to all as Michigan’s No. 1 QB until he took the first snap Saturday at his 4.

He rolled left and threw a strike to the flat on his first pass and sprinted for 9 yards on his first run, setting up a 14-play, 96-yard touchdown drive. On his second possession, he ran for a 32-yard TD to put him over the 100-yard mark en route to setting a rushing record for a Michigan QB.

“I knew I had to play well or somebody else would take the snaps,” Robinson said.

Robinson carried the ball 29 times — mostly by design — and said a shot to his hip was what knocked him out of the game briefly.

“I’m a tough guy,” he said. “I’m not changing anything.”

Rodriguez said “stay tuned,” when asked if Robinson earned the start against Notre Dame. But barring an injury, seeing Devin Gardner or Tate Forcier under center for the first snap against Notre Dame would be stunning.

Rodriguez lost a school-record nine games in his debut season in Ann Arbor without a quarterback who fit his read-option scheme and was forced to play freshmen last year, turning a 4-0 start into a 5-7 flop.

UConn, though, was the first team to find out Rodriguez has a player under center who can do what he wants with his feet and arm.

“It’s a totally different team because of the quarterback,” Edsall said.

– Larry Lage

Veteran coach Jack Crowe leads JSU to huge victory

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Jack Crowe has been coaching football for 40 years, but even he was at a loss to describe how Jacksonville State pulled off the unthinkable with a 49-48 double-overtime victory over Mississippi on Saturday.

“I don’t believe you could repeat the circumstances again in a hundred years,” Crowe said. “You just couldn’t.”

Not only was it undoubtedly the biggest win in school history, but the way it played out made the final score even more unbelievable.

The Gamecocks erased a 31-10 halftime deficit, marking the school’s biggest comeback win. Then in double overtime, Crowe gambled after his team scored a touchdown to pull to 48-47, electing to go for the 2-point conversion instead of kicking the extra point.

It turned out to be a decision that Jacksonville State fans, and Ole Miss fans, will remember for a long time. It was the Rebels’ first loss to a Football Championship Subdivision team in school history.

On the final play, Jacksonville State freshman quarterback Coty Blanchard took the snap and had to retreat almost immediately because Ole Miss brought a huge pass rush. Then in desperation, he threw what looked like a basketball hook shot into the end zone.

Calvin Middleton was right there to grab the football, falling just past the goal line to ignite a wild celebration at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Blanchard, who was Alabama’s high school Mr. Football last season, admitted the play didn’t go exactly as planned.

Of course, that didn’t really matter after the result.

“We’ll take whatever we can get,” Blanchard said.

Jacksonville State used two quarterbacks with Blanchard and Marques Ivory. Both made important plays during the upset, combining to go 22 of 36 for 252 yards and four touchdowns. The Gamecocks scored on their final six possessions, including touchdowns on the final five.

The win was especially sweet for Crowe, who’s been on the wrong end of an upset like this before. In 1992, he was the coach at Arkansas when the Razorbacks lost to The Citadel — which also played at a lower-level.

He was fired the next day.

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt, who has won 18 games over the past two seasons, won’t face the same fate. Nutt was the receivers coach under Crowe during that 1992 season.

“I normally wouldn’t do this, but I think of Houston as a brother,” Crowe said. “I think we took advantage of them while they’re still in the search to find themselves. I’ve just got a tremendous amount of respect for him and their program. That’s a quality football team that’s going to win a lot of games.”

Now the challenge is to deal with success while preparing to face Chattanooga on Saturday in Jacksonville, Ala. If there’s one thing the Gamecocks now know, it’s that anything can happen on the football field.

“I think we have to be real careful,” Crowe said.

But for now, there’s probably still some celebrating going on up in northeastern Alabama.

“Years from now, we’ll still be talking about it like it happened today,” receiver Jeffrey Cameron said.

– David Brandt

After shocking loss, Mississippi tries to regroup

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — For the most part, things have gone quite well for Mississippi’s football program since coach Houston Nutt arrived on campus in November of 2007.

There have been two top-25 finishes. Two Cotton Bowl victories. And two successful seasons to heal the wounds from the three disastrous Ed Orgeron years.

But the Nutt era suffered its first true black eye on Saturday, when the Rebels inexplicably lost to Jacksonville State 49-48 in double overtime. It was the first time Ole Miss lost to a Football Championship Subdivision team in school history.

Nutt, like his players, appeared stunned immediately afterward. And that sick feeling hadn’t changed on Sunday, as the coaches dissected the ugly loss.

“It’s the toughest night and toughest film session I’ve ever had,” Nutt said.

Now, with 11 games left, his charge is to make sure it doesn’t define the season.

Although just about every facet of the Ole Miss football team had issues in the loss, the defensive collapse was most stunning. Ole Miss led 31-13 midway through the third quarter, but then Jacksonville State scored on its final six possessions, including touchdowns on the final five.

“I give all the credit to Jacksonville State for never giving up, but we played embarrassingly,” linebacker D.T. Shackelford said. “That’s not up to our standards at all.”

Mississippi defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix was given a three-year contract worth $500,000 per year in the offseason after his defense ranked among the top half of the Southeastern Conference in most major categories last season.

But that wasn’t the case on Saturday, when the Rebels had a load of missed tackles and busted assignments.

“We’re just better than that,” Nutt said. “That’s what’s frustrating.”

The Rebels were also hurt by three turnovers. One of them — a fumble by quarterback Nathan Stanley — led directly to a Jacksonville State touchdown. The Gamecocks had no turnovers.

Mississippi plays at Tulane on Saturday. It’s the first time the two teams will face off since 2000, when the Rebels won 49-20 in Oxford.
